Effect of N6 - Benzyladenine on Germination of Lettuce Seeds

Abstract
In the view of difficulty in seed germination of crisbhead type of lettuce during the summer high temperature season, a study was conducted to see if a kind cytokinins, N^6-benzyladenine (BA.) has any promotive influence of the germination of var. Great Lakes #54 seeds and its practical value when applied at various concentrations.
1. The seed-bed treatment of BA. at relatively low level showed promoted germination of the seeds and shortened mean number of days necessary for germination, while no such influence was observed if the 100 ppm was applied.
2. The dipping treatment for 30 min and 60 min(then dried for 4 hours) also showed increased rate of seed germination at both low and high levels of BA. on the 3rd and 7th day for seed sowing. Although a test of 60 min seed-dipping for 9-day drying showed increased rate of germination at th 3rd day periods mean number of days required for germination wasshortened.
3. A dipping treatment of short period no longer than I hour not only restores low rate of germination due to the summer high temperature is this country, but also has possible practical use of promoting germination of lettuce seeds.
